At its regular monthly meeting last Wednesday, the Mamou Town Council approved the hiring of a new full-time patrolman to increase the number of officers on duty during daylight hours.
Last month, Chief Brent Zackery told the Council that the department had been receiving an increased number of calls during the daytime, making it difficult to respond to each call in an timely manner. He also saw that there would be a need for another officer at the end of the month due to the start of summer vacation for the schools.
The Council agreed to hire a new officer, Roderick Pickens; and to move patrolman Ricky Thomas from part-time to full-time. Now, Mamou will have two officers on patrol from 6 am to 6 pm.
Zackery also told the council that he assigned the school crossing guard to monitor the public park in the afternoons until 7 pm. There had been a problem with unsupervised minors at the park. Some of the problems included bullying, profanity, and littering.
According to Mayor Ricky Fontenot, a new rule has been put in place for the public park. Beginning a couple of weeks ago, children under 12-years-old must be supervised while they are at the park.
Fontenot also emphasized that the walking trail is to be used for foot-traffic only. “No riding bikes on the trail,” he said.
The Council adopted the 2018 tax millage rates, keeping them unchanged from last year. It accepted the Louisiana Compliance Questionnaire for its annual audit.
In other business, the Council appointed Dr. Francisco Cantu to the Board of Trustees of the Savoy Medical Management Group; and it approved a resolution supporting the designation of a bicycle route – USBR 90 – through south-central Louisiana, including through Evangeline Parish and Mamou.
It also heard from Brian Ardoin, a candidate for Evangeline Parish sheriff. The election for sheriff will be 2019.
