EPSO arrests suspect in weekend shooting

A shooting that occurred over the weekend at an event that took place in the Beaver Creek area has left one individual dead and another injured.
In a press release from the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office’s Investigations Division, the suspect in this matter was identified as Brandon Perkins.
According to the release, the incident took place “on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at approximately 0115 hours (1:15 a.m.).” The EPSO learned of the incident when it “received a transfer call from 9-1-1 Dispatch.” Deputies were then “dispatched to a report of a shooting at the address of 1201 Joe Fontenot Road.”
The release went on to explain that “the initial investigation by the EPSO revealed that a male subject attending the event, identified as DeLanzo Veal, had been shot in his upper body and a second victim, later identified as Katrina Thomas, also suffered from a gunshot wound beneath her lower lip.”
According to the release, the shooting resulted from an altercation that occurred between Veal and Perkins during the event.
The release stated that “the altercation led to the victim (Veal) being shot multiple times.” The second victim (Thomas),
“was also rushed to Oakdale Hospital for her wounds.” Thomas was treated and later released.”
Veal was also rushed to Oakdale Hospital, “where he was later pronounced dead.”
Although Perkins fled the scene, he was later located and questioned by the EPSO. He was then arrested and charged with second degree murder and aggravated second degree battery. Perkins currently remains incarcerated in the Evangeline Parish Jail without bond.
