With the holiday season here, Ville Platte and Evangeline Parish Fire District #2 Fire Chief Chris Harrison and firefighter would like to offer the following safety tips to keep residents safe while using fireworks during this time of year.
The fire chief’s tips are as follows:
If possible, attend a public fireworks show because leaving it up to the professionals is the safest way.
A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities. Never give fireworks to children.
Light on firework at a time and then quickly move away.
Use fireworks as directed on consumer product safety labels and never alter the products.
Observe local laws and have a designated shooter.
Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save alcohol for after the show.
Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area, away from buildings and vehicles.
Wear safety glasses and have a water hose ready when shooting fireworks.
Never relight a dud. You need to soak them in water and wait 20 minutes before placing them in a trash can.
Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them in metal or glass containers.
This is a friendly reminder from your local fire department. Have a safe and happy holiday season and remember we are at your fingertips.
