Turkey Creek Council votes to raise millages to the maximum

The Turkey Creek Council heard from Kristen Childers, a consultant with Louisiana Municipal Association, over the village’s millage rates.
“One source of revenue for the village comes from property taxes,” Childers said. “Based off of the last audit report, the current 6.2 mills was bringing in about $11,195.00. You have a maximum rate of 6.56 mills, which is the same rate the village levied prior to the 2016 reassessment and which would gain an additional $650.00 annually through property taxes. This is not a tax increase. This comes from your general alimony tax which is allocated by the Constitution.”
Childers then explained the state mandates all parish assessors to reassess property tax values.
“If you do not levy and secure that maximum rate prior to the next assessment, which is next year, then the 6.2 mills will then become your max,” Childers said. “You will not be able to levy the 6.56 mills and gain that additional $650.00.”
The council voted to pass resolutions to collect the 6.56 mills.
In other business, the council:
• approved Village Clerk Melissa Ferguson’s milage for payment.
• heard Village Police Chief Ben Bordelon’s monthly report.
• reviewed the financial report and comparison of collections report including the financial statements, sales tax revenues, monthly expenditures, and utility adjustments.
• went into an executive session for employee performance.
