Senator LaFleur pulls bill that would lower the drinking age

Louisiana Residents will continue to have to wait until they are 21 to purchase alcohol in La. after Senator Eric LaFleur (D) did away with his proposal to lower the drinking age.
The decision to pull his bill was a result of concerns that the bill could cost the state millions of dollars in federal aid.
According to Senator LaFleur, the bill was an effort to promote responsible behavior and education about the damaging effects of binge drinking.
The state senator’s proposal would have created a drinking certificate program that would have allowed 19 and 20-year-olds to purchase and consume alcohol legally if they were to take an education course about the risks of alcohol.
KLFY reported on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, that “Governor John Bel Edwards’ administration says the measure could risk federal money that comes into the state for roadwork and other safety programs.”
LaFleur officially pulled his bill from consideration on Tuesday.
