Students across the state have showed continued improvements on the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP 2025) assessments in English language arts (ELA), math, and social studies according to a report released last month by the state’s Department of Education. A second report will be released later this month which will show each student’s annual progress.
Here in Evangeline Parish, eight of the 11 schools saw improvements in their percentage of ELA, math, and social studies students who achieved Mastery+ in Grades 3 through 8.
The grading range goes from Advanced to Mastery, Basic, Approaching Basic, and Unsatisfactory.
W.W. Stewart Elementary saw 58 percent of its students achieve this rank, which is a nine percent increase from last year. Pine Prairie High School saw 40 percent of its students achieve Mastery+ which is a seven percent increase from the year before. Two schools, Chataignier Elementary and Mamou Elementary, were tied with a five percent increase over last year’s numbers when CE came in at 27 percent and ME at 44 percent. Bayou Chicot Elementary and Mamou High each saw a four percent increase as BCE rose to 35 percent and MH rose to 32 percent. Also seeing increases were Ville Platte High School (from 20 to 23 percent) and James Stephens Montessori (from 43 to 44 percent).
Basile High School saw no change in the percentage of its students in Grades 3-8 achieving Mastery+ and stayed at 37 percent. However, Vidrine Elementary saw a 12 percent decrease from its 47 percent in 2018 to 35 percent in 2019. Also decreasing was Ville Platte Elementary with a 10 percent change from 23 percent in 2018 to 13 percent in 2019.
Similar changes are reflected when the subjects of English I, English II, Algebra I, Geometry, and U.S. History are factored into the equation.
Once these high school subjects were factored, PPHS saw an eight percent increase from 2018’s 38 percent to 46 percent in 2019. MHS increased four percent to 36 percent in 2019 from 32 percent in 2019. Also increasing were VPHS (from 25 to 28) and BH (from 38 to 40).
The four charts as seen on Page 5 reflect data when the results are broken down into the separate subject areas. All data has been taken from the Louisiana Department of Education Website.
