A day of leisure over the weekend turned deadly as an Avoyelles Parish resident drowned at Crooked Creek Recreational Park.
On Sunday, July 28, 2019, an Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy was doing his normal routine patrol on the 1300 Block of Sandy Beach Drive near the beach area when he was notified of a drowning person needing help,” Evangeline Parish Sheriff Eddie Soileau said in a press release. “
The press release continued as follows: “First responders and Search and Rescue were immediately contacted. Rescuers from swam to the location where the drowning victim was last seen. A short time later, first responders located an unresponsive male subject and swam back to the beach area with him. Acadian Ambulance Medics immediately attempted to resuscitate the male subject by the use of CPR but was unable to revive him. The subject was pronounced dead from drowning by an Evangeline Parish Coroner. The male subject was later identified as Lester J Keller, DOB 07/19/1991 (28), of Mansura.”
The matter remains under investigation, but it appears to be an accidental drowning.
