The man wanted for the 2018 murder of Kathy Weston turned himself into local law enforcement officers on Thursday.
A spokeswoman with the Ville Platte Police Department, said, “Thursday morning, Robert Marquez Wilson, of Ville Platte, turned himself into the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office and was booked into the parish jail.”
The murder of Weston occurred on April 23, 2017, and initially resulted in the arrest of Marquez’s brother, 19-year-old Tiberrious Wilson. Weston is believed to have been an innocent bystander in this murder, which occurred at a store near the corner of Chataignier and Jackson Streets in Ville Platte.
A warrant was issued for Marquez after an Evangeline Parish grand jury indicted him on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, on one count of Second Degree Murder. Following its decision, Evangeline Parish District Attorney Trent Brignac shed light on how Marquez became a suspect in this matter.
Brignac said, “In conjunction with Tiberrious being released, eye witnesses came forward confirming that they observed Marquez as the shooter.”
A 72 hour hearing was held for Marquez on Thursday in 13th Judicial District Judge Chuck West’s courtroom, where Alex Chapman was appointed as the defendant’s attorney.
During the hearing, Marquez’s arraignment date was also set for June 21, 2018 in Judge West’s courtroom.
At this time, Marquez remains incarcerated in the parish jail on a $1,000,000.00 bond.
A walk will be held in honor of the victim, Weston, on Monday, April 23rd, exactly one year since the murder occurred.
The walk will begin at Ninth Baptist Church, located at 726 N. Latour St., and end where the shooting occurred at the corner of Chataignier and Jackson Streets.
