MAMOU -- The Mamou Demons scored two touchdowns in the final quarter, but it was too little too late as they fell to the Bunkie Panthers 31-20 in a non-district contest Friday night.
With the loss, Mamou fell to 1-2 on the season. The Demons will travel to Port Barre this Friday night in another non-district match-up.
It was all Bunkie in the beginning of the contest as the Panthers scored 21 unanswered points in the first three quarters of play.
Bunkie picked up their first touchdown of the game when junior quarterback Austin Temple snuck in from four yards out. John Michael Eves added the extra point to give the Panthers a 7-0 with 6:46 to go in the first quarter.
Neither team was able to pick up any momentum in the remaining time of the first period. Bunkie got back on track in the second quarter offensively.
The Panthers were able to put another scoring drive together late in the second quarter. With only 3:45 to go before the half, Lataj’drick Howard dove in from four yards out to give Bunkie a two touchdown lead. The extra point was true from Eves allowing the Panthers to head into the locker room with a 14-0 lead.
It did not take Bunkie long to get back on the scoreboard in the second half. With only :21 seconds taken off of the clock, Temple kept the ball on an option play and raced 39 yards for the touchdown.
The point after was true off of the foot of Eves, making it a 21-0 game in favor of the Panthers.
Mamou finally put up some numbers late in the third quarter when Daylon Ardoin hit Kyrian Green for a 20 yard touchdown strike. The extra point was no good. However, with 1:45 to go in the quarter, Mamou had cut the Bunkie lead down to 21-6.
The Demons sliced into that lead once again, this time Ardoin hooked up with Payton Vidrine for a 31-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was no good making it a 21-13 game with 11:00 left in the fourth quarter.
That score would not remain for very long. On the ensuing kickoff, Jakobe Creppel raced 80 yards for the touchdown. Once again the extra point was good, giving the Panthers a 28-14 lead with nine minutes to go in the game.
Bunkie was able to stretch that lead to 31-14 just two minutes later when Eves hit a 26 yard field goal.
The final score of the night came with 3:55 left in the contest. This time it was an 11-yard run from Green that allowed Mamou to cut the lead down to 31-19. Jalon Bradley tacked on the two-point run to make it 31-20.
