A Christmas caroling event was given the backing of the Mamou Town Council at its regular meeting Wednesday.
The idea was that of Mia Lavergne who brought it before the council.
Lavergne told the council she had “an idea to load up friends and family on trailers and go around to visit people who have recently lost someone one or who is sick or who is in the nursing home and assisted facilities.”
She continued, “I hope it just spreads in the community because I feel like people forget Christmas is about Jesus and the kids, and I think it will just be a good thing.”
With the council’s input, members of the community can take part in the event and can suggest names of people who are sick, who are shut in, or who have lost someone.
The event will gather at the town hall at 5:00 p.m. on December 2. From there, it will first go to the nursing home in Mamou.
“We are going to plan a route based on the reaction we get,” said Lavergne. “We’ll get out as a group, and we’ll sing about five or six songs. We’ll do a few that are fun and one or two that are traditional religious songs.”
The trailers will return to the town hall at 8:00 p.m. where there will be cookies and hot chocolate available. At that time, the city Christmas tree will be lit.
“I’m hoping at the end someone will lead the prayer, and then we can all surround the Christmas tree after it’s lit and sing one last song like ‘O, Holy Night,’” said Lavergne.
In other business, the council voted to introduce a proposed ordinance to amend the Year 2018 budget to those amounts shown as the “Amended to 12/31/18 Projected Actual Result at Year End” and to introduce a proposed ordinance to adopt a Year 2019 budget. Both proposed ordinances are set for Wednesday, December 12 at 5:45 p.m. prior to the regular meeting.
Also in other business, the council voted to adopt a resolution to approve an application for a grant funding through the Community Development Community Water Enrichment Fund that will go toward the town’s water projects.
