Ville Platte Elementary hosted its second French Immersion Night for the community on Tuesday, March 12, and showcased French Immersion students and teachers who shared a little about themselves to those in attendance at the event that took place in the school’s gymnasium.
The night began with French Immersion students treating the audience to the pledge of allegiance recited in French, and then VPE Principal Sally Morrow introduced her school’s French teachers as well as special guests at the event.
Special guests in attendance were Superintendent of Schools Darwan Lazard, Assistant Superintendent of Schools Mike Lombas, and Supervisors Penny McDaniel, Mary Anne Fontenot, and Cheryl Tezeno.
Following Morrow’s introductions, the French Immersion teachers then took their turn sharing a little about themselves and about the places they call home.
The French teachers speaking were, Madame Louise Tini, Madame Catherine Sabiron, Madame Corrinne Pedergnana, and Madame Lise Jones.
The four ladies have traveled to Louisiana from France, Africa and Canada to share their native language with students at Ville Platte Elementary through the French Immersion program. This program, which began two years ago at VPE and Mamou Elementary, was made possible by CODOFIL and was brought to Evangeline Parish with assistance from Senator Eric LaFleur and Representative Bernard LeBas.
Each teacher shared different types of food their countries offer; and then following their speeches, the crowd was given the opportunity to taste some of those special delights.
The foods included Quiche aux Champignous, Ragoût de Boulettes, and Loupe à l’oignon. VPE staff also served jambalaya to those present at the event.
Before closing out the night, students, staff and those from the community were able to enjoy dancing as Korey Broussard and Trey O’neil provided Zydeco music at the French night.
