It was all about recognizing Evangeline Parish students, schools and personnel for a variety of different reasons at the Evangeline Parish School Board meeting Wednesday.
The first to be honored were two Bayou Chicot Elementary students who were named to the District 3 Honor Band. Those students were Grace Bordelon and Collin Deville.
During the meeting, Pine Prairie High and BCE band teacher John Havard provided insight on the requirements to be selected for the Honor Band.
According to Havard to try out for the honor band students were required to prepare two pieces and play six of their major scales for judges.
Next up was Supervisor Penny McDaniel, who recognized several schools for attaining excellence honor roll for the 2017-2018 school year for their early childhood programs.
McDaniel shared, five schools in the Evangeline Parish School District earned this honor, and those schools were PPHS, Mamou Elementary, Vidrine Elementary, W.W. Stewart, and BCE.
The early childhood supervisor also shared PPHS received the Top Gains Honor Roll Award. McDaniel said, “Pine Prairie High received this distinctive honor because it grew by one index point, which is huge to grow by one index point.”
Maintenance and Operations Facilitator Jason Hazelton then addressed the school board to share the school maintenance and safety walk-through inspections winners for the first quarter of this school year.
In the big school division, the school’s custodians being recognized for their well kept campus were from Basile High School, while Evangeline Central School was the winner in the small school division.
Custodians and principals from the winning schools were each given a $25 gift card to Walmart.
During Superintendent of Schools Darwan Lazard’s comments he expressed gratitude to Cameron-Schlumberger for inviting James Stephens Montessori students to its facility recently.
While visiting Cameron, Lazard said, the Ville Platte based industry gave presents to each student. Lazard said, “It was very touching to see the students’ reactions to the gifts they received. I would just like to thank Cameron-Schlumberger and its employees for welcoming our students to their facility.”
In closing the meeting, the board went into executive session to begin the superintendent evaluation process. Upon reopening the regular meeting, Board President Wayne Dardeau shared the board discussed the upcoming evaluation, which he said will be finalized on January 16, 2019.
