Chataignier Council hears about new warrant system

In the absence of Village Police Chief Clint Brasseaux, Officer Kalinsky Ardoin reported to the village council Monday night about a new computer system that can better serve the police department.
The new system is called Warrant Now, and, according to Ardoin, “makes it easier for us to do a warrant.” Ardoin continued, “Instead of typing up a warrant like we have been doing where it’s time consuming, we will be able to send a warrant right away to the judge so he can sign it. Then, it will go straight to the jail wherever the person is being booked. The bond and everything can be set there.”
Village Attorney Greg Vidrine told the council that he uses the computer system as City Judge for Ville Platte. “It really is pretty useful,” he stated. “It is probably a cost-saving measure as well.”
Ardoin told the council that the cost of the system is around $400.00 a year and that he will bring the matter again before the council after he gets more information.
The council then heard from Village Administrator Gail McDavid about work being done to convert the old library building into a community center.
McDavid advised the council that the grant money has been approved and that the work has already begun. “We had to remove the sink and the hot water heater,” he stated. “The carpeting has all been removed all the way, and the mold remediation has been taken care of.”
He then told the council it was discovered that additional work will be needed to be done to the flooring which includes putting in a sub floor. “The flooring is solid vinyl, and it won’t last long without the sub floor,” he reported. “There’s no more money in the grant, that I know of.”
The cost for the sub floor, according to McDavid, is $1,200.00. The money would have to come from some other source besides the grant, and no other action was taken on the sub floor.
As for the old library, Mayor Jackie Thomas Malveaux reported, “it will be a community center where we will be able to do some small parties.” She added, “This will be a much nicer place once it’s actually finished that we will be able to offer residents and local people who want to rent a building.”
McDavid also reported that there is still no scheduled start date for the renovation of the village’s sewer system, and the mayor further reported that the village is getting new benches for the village park.
In other business, the council:
• heard from a representative from AFLAC about different policies that are available for village employees.
• adopted a resolution of 2018 property tax millages.
• adopted a resolution in compliance with the Municipal Water Pollution Prevention Environmental Audit report for 2016 and 2017.
• set the date for the budget meeting as Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 6:00 p.m.
