Candidate announcement

I, Arthur Savoy, am announcing my candidacy for reelection as the Evangeline Parish School Board Member for District 10.
I have lived in Evangeline Parish for 40 plus years and am married to Charlotte Fontenot Savoy. Together we have three children and six grand-children.
I began my career in the education system in 1980 working as a welding instructor at the Career Center, today known as Evangeline Central School, in the Vidrine area.
After 10 years of serving the Evangeline Parish School District in this role, I advanced my own education by earning an associate’s degree in industrial education from Sowella Community College. Once I earned my degree, I began teaching at South Louisiana Community College’s Coreil Campus in Ville Platte. I have spent the last 39 years of my career at SLCC, 10 of which I have been the lead welder for the welding department.
Throughout the course of my career, I was given the opportunity to also serve students within our communities as the school board member for District 10, which is a position I have proudly held for the last 22 years.
My background not only in education, but also in welding, has afforded me the opportunity to play a major role in assisting Evangeline Parish school employees in identifying needed maintenance projects. Through this my fellow board members and myself have been able to ensure that necessary renovations and upgrades on all 12 school campuses were performed to provide our students with the best learning environment.
As an educator to this day, I have a keen understanding of the ever changing education system and a desire to see that we as a school district progress with the changes that we constantly face. I have taken part in seeing our school district move forward by creating a plan that will allow us to provide Chrome Books to students at every school in the district, develop special academic programs on several campuses, such as S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) at Chataignier Elementary, and Virtual Learning Program (E-School) for every school in Evangeline Parish.
As an educator at SLCC, I understand the need to educate our students on higher education and the variety of options out there for students upon graduating with their high school diploma. This knowledge has allowed me to support the LSUE Academy, which was created to allow high school students in Evangeline Parish to earn an Associate of Arts Degree by the time they graduate high school.
After teaching for so many years, I have a true understanding of how far showing appreciation to the ones having a major impact on the lives of our students - the employees - can go. For that reason, we as a board did what we had to do to give our employees in the entire school district a raise recently.
While we as a board have accomplished all of these things together for those who make up the Evangeline Parish School District, it has been the employees and the students who have been the true champions through the massive amount of curriculum changes and financial woes Louisiana’s education system has faced over the years. Their hard work, coupled with our boards desire to provide them with the necessary tools to be successful, has led to our school district maintaining a B-rating from the La. Department of Education.
If reelected, I pledge to continue to spend time in our schools hearing the needs and concerns of our teachers so that we can continue to address those needs in the most effective ways.
I humbly ask that if you, the electorates of District 10, have a desire to continue to see growth from our students and educators in Evangeline Parish, then vote to reelect me, Arthur Savoy, as your representative on the Evangeline Parish School Board.
