On September 26, 2022 at approximately 11:50am the Mamou Police Department was contacted by the Mamou High School in reference to a written threat of violence toward the school. Officers immediately responded to the scene and met with school administrators who informed officers that they discovered a written message of a threat that would be occurring on a specific day. The schools administration along with Captain Cory Benoit took immediate action and was able to locate the source of the writing through investigation and had one juvenile suspect in custody. The juvenile’s parent was notified and allowed officers and detectives with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office to conduct a search of their residence to assure that the juvenile had no access to any items to under go the threat. Due to the quick response from the school staff and law enforcement, the school was never placed on lock down and was never at harm.
Chief Zackery would like to commend his officers for the quick response and apprehension. He would like to also remind everyone that the Mamou Police Department will investigate any and all threats taken toward the schools and take immediate action to assure the safety of the children. Anyone found to make any threats will be prosecuted.
