The City of Ville Platte applied for and was honored to receive the 2023-2024 Keep Louisiana Beautiful receptacle grant. A total of 10 receptacles were provided through the grant and will be used in key areas where an abundance of litter is a regular problem in the city. The hope is that the receptacles will be a deterrent to throwing trash on the ground and instead put in its proper place.
In an effort to make positive changes in Ville Platte, Mayor Ryan LeDay Williams will be hosting a citywide clean up and beautification day on Saturday, April 27.
The public is invited to join the city starting at 9:30 a.m. at Ville Platte City Hall. City employees, along with Mayor Williams and other volunteers, will be cleaning up the city and working on a beautification project.
On the same day, The Town of Mamou Clean-Up, aimed at fostering a cleaner and litter-free community, is scheduled to take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This event, originally slated for Monday, April 22, promises to bring together volunteers from across Mamou to contribute to the beautification of their beloved town.
Volunteers are encouraged to meet at Lyon’s Market, at 8:30 a.m., where they will receive instructions and necessary supplies for the cleanup efforts. The event is open to the public, and individuals of all ages are encouraged to participate.
The town’s clean-up is not only to help keep Mamou beautiful but also to fulfill a portion of the Keep Louisiana Beautiful 2023-24 Healthy Communities Grant received by the town last fall. These efforts underscore the town’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being. Also, as part of the conditions of the grant, new litter abatement signs were installed earlier this year in 15 locations throughout Mamou, serving as a visible reminder of the importance of keeping the town clean.
Project Directors Candace ‘Candy’ Terry and Troy Fontenot are leading the charge and are available for any inquiries regarding the event. They can be contacted at 337-831-1892 and 337-459-0334, respectively.
For those unable to attend the main event, there is still an opportunity to contribute. Residents are encouraged to pick up trash on their streets and share their efforts on social media. Please take pictures of yourself, family, and friends participating in clean-up activities and text them to Dr. Gwen Fontenot at 337-831-0852 for posting on the town’s social media page(s).
“This event presents a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and make a tangible difference in the cleanliness and aesthetics of Mamou,” said Dr. Fontenot. “Let’s join hands and work towards a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Mamou!”
